MOTOR SPORTS - RALLY

My first memory of motorsport is from the late 50s. My father was active in MHF (Swedish Motorists' National Federation) and at that time, they had a widespread operation within car orienteering. During the 50s and 60s, they had many, and sometimes difficult, competitions. One autumn evening, we were assigned to man a checkpoint. It was my father, myself, and a young couple; we were placed east of Möckeln, up in the forest near Labbsand and Knutsbol. It was dark and quiet in the forest, then a car with several extra lights broke both the darkness and silence. They stopped and received a confirmation that they had been at the checkpoint, then they continued, and the darkness and silence settled again until the next car appeared. It was quite exciting for a boy of 8-10 years old.

In 1962 MHF's National Championship in car orienteering took place in Laxå. I remember my father and I were there and acted as officials at the start and the finish line which was located at a school. Almost as exciting, but this time because it was Sweden's elite who competed.

1964 I went to my first competition as a map reader for my brother, also in car-O with a Saab 92. There were three attempts that were more disastrous than competitive. I felt both sick and lost.

1968 I did my premiere as a co-driver in Rally, Silversvängen in Hällefors with a BMC Coper.

Between 1970 and 1975, I competed in a number of races with, in turn – Opel Kadett, Volvo Amazon, Volvo PV, and Opel Kadett Rallye. There were both ups and downs, but eventually, I obtained an A-driver's license and later a Co-driver's license, both of which gradually achieved international status.

Initially, I was involved with Karlskoga Motor Club (KMK), it was the rally people who largely acted as officials at Gelleråsen Motor Stadium when racing competitions were held there. Later, SMK Karlskoga was formed by a few enthusiasts within the rally section, a club that I have remained loyal to since its inception and that I am still a member of. With the exception of a few years when I held a Norwegian license, my license has also belonged to SMK Karlskoga.

In 1973, I participated in my first international competition. Together with Christer Reinholdsson from Karlskoga, we competed in the World Rally Championship event in Finland, Jyväskylä - 'The 1000 Lakes Rally'.

In 1976, I started working as a co-driver, first competing in a few races with Jonny Johansson from Lindesberg.

After that, I teamed up with Morgan Carlsson from Filipstad. We initially participated in a couple of races in a SAAB V4, but from the South Swedish Rally in 1976, we competed in a FORD Escort BDA all the way until the RAC Rally in 1979.

In 1985, I partnered with Anders Kjällström from Vara in a Volvo 240 Turbo.

In 1989-90, I teamed up in an AUDI Cupé Quattro with Peter Friberg from Ludvika as the driver.

In 1991, I competed in the Norwegian Championship alongside Ole V Såtvedt from Kongsvinger in a Mitsubishi VR4.

From 1991 to 1993, I spent a few years with Thomas Rådström from Vännäs in a Toyota Celica.

In 1992, I experienced the most unusual reason for a transportation penalty during a race at the Jatech special stage in Hova with Inger Öman in a Citroen AX. We received a 7-minute penalty because she had to stop at one of the service areas to breastfeed her baby.

Between 1993 and 1995, I started with Jonas Kruse in a Volvo 240 before switching to front-wheel drive in a Renault Clio.

From 1997 to 2001, I returned to Norway, Oslo, and joined Kristian Kolberg in a Mazda 323 GT-R. Later, we switched to a Hyundai Accent WRC.

In 2004, I participated in my last competition, the Kong Christian Race with Per-Martin Persson in a Volvo 940, VOC.

Over the years, I have competed with many different drivers in both Sweden and Norway, at both top and amateur levels. This has given me a lot of experience but, most importantly, countless fun memories. Throughout the years, I have also met many wonderful people, many of whom are still my friends and acquaintances.

In 1986-87, I spent two years providing service to B-I Steffansson and Matti Hakkala in the Belgian Championship. Some peculiar rules led us to some unusual races, such as Rallye de Montagne in Lebanon, and we also competed in the Manx Rally on the Isle of Man.

In 1990, I had the honor of joining TTE, Toyota's factory team, at the Safari Rally in Kenya.

In 1993, at the Bilsport Fair in Jönköping, we formed the driver's association 'F.A.R.T.' (Föreningen Aktiva Rally-Tävlande, or Association of Active Rally Competitors).

1998 in Arboga a decision was made to shut down F.A.R.T.

From 2002 to 2003, I served as the SGA-Rally (Sportgrens ansvarig or Sports Branch Responsible) for the Southern Motorsport Federation.

From 2004 to 2013, I held the position of Team Captain for the National Rally Team.

From 2002 to 2016, after my active time as a co-driver, I was involved in several Swedish Championship races as a Competitors Relations Officer.
